BIG BUDGET FILMS

Flipped (PG for mild epithets and mature themes) Puppy love drama about a 2nd grader (Madeline Carroll) whose enduring crush on a cute classmate (Callan McAuliffe) goes unrequited for a half dozen years until the script is flipped when she starts to lose interest just as he finally begins to fall for her. With Rebecca De Mornay, Anthony Edwards and Aidan Quinn.

The Last Exorcism (PG-13 for mature themes, sexual references, terror and disturbing violence) "Found footage" horror flick about a crooked evangelical minister (Patrick Fabian) who decides to come clean by allowing a documentary filmmaker to shoot him performing another phony exorcism on a gullible subject only to get the shock of his life when the teenager (Iris Bahr) he's been summoned to help turns out to be truly possessed. With Louis Herthum, Ashley Bell and Tony Bentley.

Takers (PG-13 for profanity, sexuality, partial nudity and intense violence) Crime caper about a very successful gang of bank robbers (Chris Brown T.I., Idris Elba, Paul Walker, Michael Ealy and Hayden Christensen) who decide to pull off one last heist before retiring only to come up against a hard-boiled detective (Matt Dillon) intent on cracking the case. With Zoe Saldana, Marianne Jean-Baptiste and Jay Hernandez.

 

INDEPENDENT & FOREIGN FILMS

Centurion (R for profanity, graphic violence and grisly images) Michael Fassbender stars in the title role of this epic war saga, set in 117 A.D., as the leader of a Roman legion struggling to survive behind enemy lines following an ambush by the tribe of savages that decimated its ranks. Cast includes Dominic West, Dave Legeno and Axelle Carolyn.

Change of Plans (Unrated) Midlife-crisis dramedy revolving around the emotional ups and downs shared by 11 friends during a rather revealing dinner gathering. Ensemble features Karin Viard, Danny Boon, Marina Fois and Emmanuelle Seigner. (In French with subtitles)

Daniel & Ana (Unrated) Mexican kidnap drama, based on actual events recounting the harrowing ordeal of a bride-to-be (Marimar Vega) and her teenaged brother (Daniel Yazbek Bernal) whose lives were irreversibly altered when they were abducted and then forced to engage in intercourse with each other on camera to regain their freedom. (In Spanish with subtitles)

Highwater (Unrated) Hang Ten documentary chronicling Hawaii's annual, two month-long Triple Crown of surfing staged each year on the island of Oahu along the infamous 7 Mile Miracle.

Louis (R for nudity and sexuality) Silent Satchmo bio-pic, shot in b&w and set in New Orleans in 1907, recreates the challenging childhood of Louis Armstrong (Anthony Coleman) as he endeavored to acquire his first horn at the age of 6. With Jackie Earle Haley, Anthony Mackie and Shanti Lowry.

Mesrine: Killer Instinct (Unrated) Bio-pic revisiting the exploits of France's Public Enemy #1 Jacques Mesrine (Vincent Cassel) and sidekick Jeanne Schneider (Cecile de France), vicious mobsters dubbed the French Bonnie and Clyde by the gendarmes during their globetrotting reign of terror over the Sixties and Seventies. (In French with subtitles)

The Milk of Sorrow (Unrated) Peruvian psychological drama, set in Lima, about a woman (Magaly Solier) suffering from a rare affliction transmitted through the breast milk of rape victims. With Susi Sanchez, Efrain Solis and Barbara Lazon. (In Spanish and Quecha with subtitles)
