Seattle Forum on Aging Out of Foster Care

The Central District Forum for Arts & Ideas presents a new event to explore the issue of children no longer eligible for foster care at Northwest African American Museum in Seattle on Thursday, March 25, 2010 at 7 p.m.
Each year, thousands of children turn 18 and "age out" of the child welfare system. Of these, almost half are Black and have spent the majority of their childhood being shuffled through the system. Many of them remain unaware of the support available to them, both at a reduced capacity from the foster care system and through other resources. This discussion examines the issue of children no longer eligible for foster care, and its impact on our community.
Co-sponsored by Casey Family Programs, Child Welfare Training and Advancement Program, and UW School of Social Work, this discussion will be moderated by Zynovia Hetherington, Program Director for Child Welfare Training and Advancement Program at University of Washington's School of Social Work. Panelist Rhonda Smith provides an inside look at experiencing the system while Lyman Legters, Senior Director at Casey Family Programs and others provide information and resources. The evening also features a short video by Representative Jim McDermott.
