Police: Michigan Shootings Suspect Commits Suicide

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) -- A Michigan man who went on a shooting spree that killed seven people targeted each of his victims, which included two ex-girlfriends and his 12-year-old daughter, police said Friday.

Grand Rapids Police Chief Kevin Belk said Rodrick Shonte Dantzler killed his daughter and her mother and then went to another home and killed another former girlfriend and her 10-year-old daughter, who was not his child.

Dantzler "went out hunting down" his victims, Belk said. He also said the gunman used cocaine and alcohol on the day of the attacks.

The 34-year-old ex-convict from Grand Rapids began the spree Thursday afternoon before leading police on a high-speed chase. He crashed his car, took several hostages in a stranger's home before killing himself with a shot to the head.

"It makes no sense to try to rationalize it, what the motives were," Belk said late Thursday. "You just cannot come up with a logical reason why someone takes seven peoples' lives."

Autopsies were scheduled for Friday.

Records show that Dantzler was released from state prison in 2005, after serving time for assault less than murder. A spokesman for the prison system said Dantzler had not been under state supervision since then.
