U.S. Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Portland, and other community members and U.S. Post Office staff gathered Wednesday to celebrate the official renaming of the Piedmont Post Office to Martin Luther King Jr. Post Office at Northeast 6th Avenue and Killingsworth Street.
Postal Carrier Isham Harris (pictured, along with Portland Postmaster Shawneen Betha), who, along with Jaimie Partridge, helped push Blumenauer to rename the station, told the crowd he was proud of the U.S. Postal Service.
"Let us like a good tennis player improve our service," he said with a smile. "You like that?"
Blumenauer said he was reminded on a daily basis that "the struggles Dr. King fought are still with us." He said renaming a post office might seem insignificant, but he reminded the crowd that the post office was the only

federal institution many people interacted with on a regular basis. It's also, he said, the government agency to routinely get high marks in public opinion.
